NiteSite Wolf rrp. £650

I have worked with this unit now for little on 4 weeks using it on pest control mainly rabbits but unfortunately only had one fox while using the set up.

I have been really impressed with what is essentially an add on kit that attaches to your standard day scope.

The set up includes as follow, a scope mount designed for mounting the Screen and IR unit that attaches on top of your day scope, a rubber housing pushed on to the eyepiece of your scope that the camera unit is slipped into snuggly, and a battery pack that straps to the side of your butt stock.

I have used add on kits before that are home made before and although all the set ups are different, they all are cumbersome and time consuming to set up and have wires everywhere, this unit is not like that , the other difference between this and other add on kits of this nature is that it is weather proof.

This Video shows how simple it is to set up at night in a vehicle.

The NiteSite Wolf allows your rifle to be both a night and day use rifle without the need to have a dedicated night set up, the image quality up to around 300 yrds is very good and can be adjust using the focus on your rifle as well as the camera focus on the units lens.

Because the NiteSite uses your scope existing set up and your only projecting an image to a screen using a camera there is absolutely no need to readjust your zero, unlike some expensive set ups such as the DFA75 from Pulsar.

Quality of the short and long range image is strictly down to your scope in the end and like most add on kits of this type for both and long range usage I would suggest a variable zoom scope or a fixed scope that has a maximum zoom of 6x, the reason why I have said this that I found using the Meopta 2100 IR 7×50 fixed mag scope that shots under 50yrds were very hard to attain flooding the image with light, However, this was rectified when I added the unit to my Delta Titanium HD 2.5-10×56 cracking the mag down to 4x zoom.

Again when it comes to scope choice usually add on kits of this nature require cheaper glassed scopes due to the amount of low light retention that expensive scopes provide, but I found that the NiteSite Wolf worked well with the expensive good lowlight scopes that I own.

Day Time Usage

I don’t do a hell of a lot of pest control during the day due to the nature of my pests in the Highlands being mainly mobile after dark, so I took the NiteSite Wolf to the range to test its daytime capabilities.

The weather was absolutely perfect for scope testing, no wind or very little , temperature was around 4 degrees C, and the sun was directly into the scope which allowed me to test the level of Glare picked up from the sun.

I was impressed by its daytime accuracy that even some dedicated set ups struggle with, the image was in colour due to using a standard camera and the image was clear.

I was happy with the comparison between using the rifle with the Wolf attached and without is shown in the following footage.

Night Time Usage

Essentially what this unit is for, to be used at night or to enhance your capability to work in complete darkness without detection by your predators or pests.

As I said before your image is clear out to atleast 300yrds giving eyeshine out to further, with units like this your image is limited by your IR Illuminator and not the camera as the camera is only retricted by your scope so technically is infinite. The IR illuminator on the Wolf which is built into the screen unit is good enough to not need a seperate IR torch which in many cases unbalances your whole rifle set up adding extra rails etc.

Image quality at night is in Black and White and the screen unit has a brightness adjustment on the top, you are provided with anti glare screens but I found I did not need them.

What I did notice though is that on occassion you did get camera glare from the IR hitting off your barrel or the bottom of the scope this can be rectified quickly by finding the spot where your glare is coming from and putting a bit of non reflective tape on the spot.

After 15 minutes of using the NiteSite I had 6 rabbits retrieved by Lanna-Lou and a final count after 3 hours of 56 rabbits. Which for me was a good night. Although as you can imagine by the end of the night for photographs  by both the dog and I the enthusiasm had completely wore off.

I did have a lot of fun with the unit though at night.

here is some footage I took using the Go Pro.

Conclusion

In conclusion the NiteSite Wolf is a brilliant piece of kit for the pest controller at all levels at a reasonable price, Some additions that have been made are available on the Rtek version but the quality of this original version of the wolf is the same.

Some of the proposals I would like to mention to NiteSite is to maybe look at is possibly adding a rangefinder for extra ease.

I do see this unit as being a good addition to any pest controllers kit , easy to use and set up as  well as hardly any noticeable weight.

There is a few things I don’t like about the kit but it is not reserved for this kit it seems to be this style of set up in general that I have a few quibbles with. The firing position takes a bit to get used to and a little unnatural specially if your using it on a centrefire that has a bit of a recoil, on the rimfire it is not too bad as little or no recoil, also shooting from a vehicle is a little awkward due to my height and the screen/IR unit on to of the scope limiting your support space off a window or rack.

But as I said these quibbles are not reserved to this unit it is the whole style of this kind of set up in general. Also you do get a bit of glare from the screen losing a bit of your own personal night clarity but there are filters provided to try reduce this.

Do I think it is worth money? yes I do , however, there are alternative cheaper options on the market but they are not as flexible in regards to usage as this as you can just literally add this to any one of your rifles and yes you can build home made kits that perform just as good but they lack in weather proofing and also they have to incorporate cumbersome IR torches.

All in All a brilliant piece of kit that is good looking too .

The predator is You.
