Laserware ND-100 Glacier Laser Designator. £299.99

. This unit is basically a laser torch that shoots out a high frequency green laser beam and can be either put to point or can be flooded.

Range – about 1000yrds at full pinpoint and about 400yrds at full flood.

The unit comes with a range of kit such, Rat tail switch, adjustable/zeroable mount and picatinny scope mounted rail with shims to fit all scopes.

Firstly the adjustable mount is really good but because of the height etc of it from the scope and the weight of the Designator in it, it does feel a little fragile and flimsy but really does work. I have spoke to Laserware in regards to this and they are currently changing this particular mount.

Set up to get on the scope is real easy and the designator takes either 1x 18650 battery (about 8 hours usage) or two C123 batteries (about 4 hours life).

The green beam omitted from the unit works at a frequency that (according to Laserware) animals such as rats, rabbits and foxes cannot see. I later found this to be true, The spectrum that the laser uses makes the beam almost invisible to the quarry I have used it on meaning that its NM rating is far too low for animals but almost perfect for Human eyesight.

I was really dubious at first in using this unit as it claims to be a lamp replacement for expensive nightvision scopes as this unit works in conjunction with your normal day scope allowing you to carry on working through the night. The green beam that comes from it is very powerful even at full flood it gives you very good image through your scope while testing it in the garden out to 100 yards, so we took it out in the field on a nights lamping to an area we know there is “lamp shy” rabbits.

I left my Yukon Photon on my .22lr and gave the designator to Chris ( my colleague and friend ) to put on his CZ ,22lr so we can see the difference and get his opinion on it. I think his first statement was something like “I am well impressed”. Through the scope the image was like you were shooting in daylight, you can clearly see every aspect of what you were looking at with literally no issues and the rabbits did not seem to mind the beam what so ever and trust me the least bit of noise sets these ones bolting. spotting bunnies out to 100 yards was simple so we went to another one of our permissions that has wide open hill ground to check what it was like at longer distances.

Second property of the night we went to was an area where there is lots of deer (obviously that’s not what we were aiming to shoot we just wanted to observe), The Roe Does were definately showing this night! In the normal lamp you can pick up their eyes easily enough but even through the scopes and binos we struggled with sex identification, so we turned on the designator and zoomed the torch into a pair of Does that were around 400 yards away and through the scope the detail on them was awesome and the same through the binos, You were able to not just have species Identification but also sex identification as anybody that uses a normal lamp will tell you is sometimes very difficult to do.

All in all this is a great piece of kit and possibly all you need to go along with your night time equipment, there are few issues though, the issues I would mainly say were the mounts and packaging. The mounts although are great, they do feel flimsy at times and seems like you have to constantly adjust them but this is being rectified and the packaging does seem a little cheap for the price your paying but the packaging I have been given was just for review purposes and I have been shown the new packaging which looks far more fitting for the money being spent. However these little faults the designator works brilliantly and does what it says on the tin and well worth the money. You do have to becareful on where you point it as it is quite dangerous (specially to passing aircraft) but as long as your careful and under normal usage this is not an issue. The designator will be staying with us a little while longer so there is more testing to do.

One thing I do have to add is that the first designator that was sent to us was faulty but Laserware sent us a replacement very quickly so the aftersales service has been good to us also. Truly a great piece of kit. I have now shot over 300 Rabbits and a number of foxes with it and I am very pleased.
